International Dawn Chorus Day

Monday is the May Bank Holiday! The traditional start of May and, thankfully, the unofficial signal that it’s finally time to truly get outside and enjoy the brighter days. At Country Lane Foods, we are just as passionate about the great outdoors as we are about great food, and this upcoming bank holiday weekend has the perfect excuse to get outside!

We’re encouraging everyone to embrace the fresh air, but with a unique and beautiful twist: by rising just a little earlier on Sunday, May 3rd, for International Dawn Chorus Day.

It’s the perfect occasion to link the wonderful world of birds—which we are so dedicated to supporting—directly to your bank holiday breakfast.

Wake Up to the World’s Oldest Concert

Wherever you are, and whatever you’re doing, the dawn chorus is happening around you. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the heart of a city or the deep countryside, asleep or wide awake. This Sunday, across the world, people will be setting their alarms just a little earlier to experience this natural symphony.

What is the Dawn Chorus? In short, it is the symphony of song performed by birds looking for love and defending their territory. As the days lengthen in spring, wildlife begins to focus on breeding. For many male birds, this means belting out the well-worn but wonderful classics to attract females. Some sing throughout the day, but it’s at dawn, as the morning light breaks, that they truly join together to perform their greatest show.

How to Experience the Magic:

  1. Set your alarm: Aim for 30 minutes before dawn (which is roughly 5:00 am – 5:30 am in the UK this time of year).

  2. Step outside or open a window: Let the beautiful, complex layers of birdsong wash over you. It’s an incredibly peaceful and uplifting way to start your holiday weekend.

  3. Take a moment: Soak in the sound, whether it’s on your bedroom windowsill, on a calm dog walk before the day begins, or even after a late Saturday night!

  4. Share the joy: Record the sound, film the moment, or simply share what you hear on social media. Encourage your friends and family to join you! Use the hashtag #DawnChorusClub to connect with others experiencing the same moment.

  5. Want to learn more? If you’re curious about who is singing, try the RSPB’s bird identifier on their website. And for a truly immersive experience, consider joining a guided dawn chorus walk at a local RSPB reserve!
